Berlin Bars & Cocktail Lounges

Bars, beers and more bars…and more beers. Aside from that there's only the cafes, cabarets, casinos, concerts, clubs and the high voltage music scene to keep you occupied!! The home of decadence since the Twenties, Berlin has more to offer than a sweet shop counter, although some of the ‘shows' may raise your eyebrows. Since re-unification, you can find a great mixture of bars: from quieter watering holes in the East to the full glitz and glam of the West.

Berlin offers some of the best nightlife in Europe. There is a very laid-back vibe which make this city so accessible yet, at the same time, everywhere you go the clientele seem incredibly cutting edge making you think you’ve stumbled upon an undiscovered underground spot. Since the Wall came down former East Berlin has turned into one of the most sought-after locations with trendy bars and restaurants springing up everywhere. The further east you go the more engaging the bars, cafés and restaurants tend to be. The further west you go the smarter and more elegant the bars are. All are dark and retro, each with the obligatory DJ who spins electric ballroom lounge grooves.

The club scene is much bigger than just the out- dated stereotype of Germans and techno. There are amazing venues attracting top performers, be it LTJ Bukem at Club Casino or Bob Dylan at the Columbia Halle; whatever you’re into, you’re sure to find it in Berlin. Bars usually open at 2200 and then close when the last guest leaves. Take this as a rule unless otherwise specified.

Berlin is also host to Geheimtip parties. These 'secret tip' parties are a part of the Berlin East-side nightlife. You have to be in the know, which normally means residency or the right people, but if you are lucky you might discover the venues for favorites, such as the Mittwochclub, every Wednesday. Sometimes the venue is only known moments before party time. Regular features of geheim- tips are climbing down trap doors into the depths of Berlin, dancing to electric funk and salsa DJs, fussball tables, long drinks, absinthe and emerging back onto the streets as the sun is well past risen.

Bar am Luetzowplatz

  • Luetzowplatz 7 TG Berlin
  • Telephone: 00 49 30 262 6807
  • Hours: M-S 2pm-3am

Sixteen metres of bar and a cocktail list almost as long. Why not play a round of musical chairs as a novel way of getting through the drinks menu? Packed to the rafters after 11pm so you're bound to meet someone.

Green Door

  • Winterfeldstrasse 50 U1/15 Nolledorfplatz
  • Berlin,
  • Telephone: 0049 30 215 2515
  • Hours: 6pm - 3am daily

Look out for a bar along Winterfieldstr. with a green door…seriously. Behind the door is a very intimate cocktail bar, styled in that classic, trendy 70’s retro feel. This bar prides itself on truly exotic cocktails and offers an enormous and impressive choice. Test their slogan "the power of positive drinking" and let us know if it works for you.

CSA Bar

  • 96 Karl-Marx Alle, Friedrichshain Berlin
  • Telephone: +49 30 2904 4741

Like hip and happening Mitte, Friedrichshain used to be a run-down former East Berlin neighborhood, but is now something of a hipster hangout. And there are few hipper nightspots here than CSA – the acronym for Czechoslovakia’s national airline which used to be located in this building. It has a stylish Soviet retro feel and is laid-back in a way that lining up to buy your one-way ticket to Prague in the old days never was. The mood is helped along by chilled-out house sounds spun by resident DJs, sleek leather benches, sculpted walls and an extensive cocktail menu that pokes fun at the old days. The retro Soviet chic is complemented by the name of the street you’re on: Karl-Marx Alle.

Victoria bar

  • Potsdamer Str.102 (Bundesstrasse 1) Tiegarten
  • Berlin, 10785
  • Telephone: 0049 30 2300 4956
  • Hours: 6pm - 3 am daily

One of the newest additions to the Berlin bar scene, the Victoria bar is a great venue to ease yourself into the night. The interior reeks of style, decadence and luxury, with leather couches and dark wood panelling as a backdrop to some great modern art – no wonder it’s just picked up an award for best interior design. To continue the relaxed vibe, there’s also a great mix of jazz, soul and Reggae.

Greenwich

  • Gipsstraße 5 Mitte Berlin, 10119

So cutting edge it doesn’t have its name on the door and the male model bar staff think a caiparinha is too un-cool to put on the menu. There’s a raised floor with leather sofas at one end to sit at, but hang around the green-lit bar area where you’ll be transfixed by walls of illuminated fish tanks framed with lime-coloured leather. Great drinks and classy, in-the-know clientele will guarantee you a mean time.

Haifisch

  • Arndtstrasse 25 Kreuzberg
  • Berlin, 10961

Quirky, laid-back cocktail bar in Kreuzberg, the west Berlin district that once stood in the shadow of the wall. Friendly, unified bar staff display expert mixology, cooking up colourful vodka and gin-based cocktails to ambient techno tunes. The back room has a sushi bar, the front is open for drinks ‘til 3am.

Bar Lounge 808

  • Oranienburger Strasse 42-3 Mitte
  • Berlin,
  • Telephone: 00 49 30 2804 6727
  • Hours: Mon -Sun 10am - 3am

The gifted architects who gave us Universum Lounge had already created this gaudy spot in the hip former East Berlin neighborhood of Mitte a few years before. The same colors are in evidence, with lavish gilt gold columns and heavy boudoir style drapes making it all a bit Moulin Rouge. A back lounge with a large aquarium evokes James Bond glam (or is it Austin Powers?) and has many plush sofas and chairs to lounge in while listening to house music. The triangular-shaped front bar though is the place to base yourself if you want to watch the girls go by through the windows on Augusstrasse. But keep an eye on the prices. Drinks run the gamut from Manhattans to Martinis but shaken or stirred they cost a bomb.

N.N. Train Cocktail Bar

  • Hauptstrasse 159 SB Berlin
  • Telephone: (00 49 30) 787 5033
  • Hours: M-S 5-2am

So you think subways are dingy and smelly? Not this train, baby. Flashy and famous for cool cocktails. It does get crowded though - grab a seat outside during rush hour.

Bambi Bar

  • Kollwitzstr 97 Prenzlauerberg

This is a great bar. The bartenders are the owners, and they like you to feel at home. Very good Pina Coladas. It also happens to be within a WiFi hotspot, if that interests you.
