There are also 17 tram routes, which offer connections to places not
accessible with the subway. At some places, especially in the city centre,
ordinary trams run underground and stop at stations. This is called the
pre-metro, because it was designed with a future conversion in mind, with
tunnels and stations of the same dimensions as on metro lines.
Trams are yellow and blue.
There are 68 stations for the whole subway network.
Operators
The subway and trams are operated by STIB / MIVB, which also runs 45
urban bus routes, covering the whole city.
There are 2 other companies operating suburban lines. De Lijn has routes
in many parts of the city and offers connection with the Flemish suburbs all
around Brussels. TEC connects Walloon suburbs and only runs across the
southern districts of the city.
The national railway company is named SNCB / NMBS. There are 28 railway
stations all over the city, 3 of which in the city centre and 2 in the
European District.
Fares and ticketing
Ordinary tickets are compatible between all the operators all over the
city. The "MTB season pass" gives access to the whole network within
Brussels. There are other kinds of tickets and passes restricted to the
network of a single operator.
Tickets are valid for one hour, starting from the moment when you insert
the ticket into a validating machine.
