Rome Bars & Cocktail Lounges
All roads most definitely lead here. Be it for your love of
ancient history, a trip to the Vatican, or just to pretend you are Cary
Grant/Audrey Hepburn for a few days - Rome is the essential destination.
With the coming of Easyjet, Ryan air, Go (and all the offers from the major
airlines) you can easily pick up return flights for less than a night out!
The Coliseum, the Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish steps, the Vatican,
the Mouth of Truth, Tivoli Gardens and the Pantheon all await, but our
advice is to just soak up the atmosphere, take in a few sites and don't
leave without visiting the boutiques off the Via del Corso! If money's no
object then book an apartment at the Hassler Hotel. Situated at the top of
the Spanish Steps, it's the perfect place to take an aperitif while looking
out onto the roofs of the palaces and churches below. |
Alien
- 13/19 Via Velletri Nuovo Salario, Rome, 00198
- Telephone: 00 39 06 8412212
- Take the metro (or a taxi!) to Trieste
A
happening club-bar in the Nuovo Salario where hot young things from the
local fashion and film world check each other out over their long drinks. It
can get pretty posey but the DJ grooves are often spot-on, whether it's hard
house on weekends or more eclectic tunes in the week. They have a couple of
dansfloors, and the music is dance, trance and house music. It's a pretty
trendy place, and you'll met trannies and trendy romans. |
Supperclub
- Via de'Nari 14
- Rome,
- Telephone: 0039 06 6880 7207
Sister
club to the already legendary Amsterdam Supperclub, the Rome version is even
more sensational because it’s still such a secret. Set in a gorgeous
restored 3rd century mansion (what Roman buildings are not works of art?)
it’s tucked down a narrow alley, has no sign on the door or bouncers outside
and you’ll miss it if you didn’t know it was here. Inside though it’s
unforgettable: a forest of extravagant drapes lead to Bar Rouge holding
area, beyond which are two sultry salons – Salle Neige and Baroque. On plush
white beds the elite of Roman society recline like stars in La Dolce Vita,
violinists and DJs provide the soundtrack and, unbelievably, waitresses
massage you as you recline on the sofas! Or perhaps that was a one off.
Either way, it’s like the Carlsberg ads have come to life. Cocktails mixed
by unfeasibly sexy staff are world class, none finer than the Smoky Martini:
Monte Cristo cigars are seeped in Lagavulin single malt and stirred over ice
with frozen vodka and a dash of vermouth. Who comes up with these ideas? Add
fine contemporary food, a great CD featuring Groove Armada and David Holmes,
and you are living La Dolce Vita.

Anima
- 57, Via Santa Maria dell'Anima Centro Storico
- Rome, 00186
- Telephone: 00 39 066864021
One the hottest and hippest food-club-bar spots in the capital when last
did you get sushi with your drum 'n' bass? Décor is very postmodern, done up
with divan seats, beds and er, tyres, for young Romans in club accessories
to lounge on. Expert DJs spin non-stop funk, soul, house and jungle while
aperitifs - how chic, are served from 6pm to 10. So you really can sip a
cocktail and eat sushi listening to the latest break beats. Unlike most
club-bars in Rome, entrance is free.

Bar della Pace
- 3/7 Via della Pace
- Rome,
- Telephone: 00 39 06 686 1216
- Hours: 9am-2am daily
As much of a Rome fixture as Trevi Fountain, this eternally trendy
café-bar is really called Antico but no-one knows it as such. Moneyed locals
sit at wicker tables beneath fonds of green ivy and survey passing fashion
victims carrying the latest from Versace or Gucci. Drinks are pricey but
pretty standard for the area and the same owner has an equally stylish
pizzeria next door. A true institution.

Bar del Fico
- Piazza del Fico
- Rome,
- Telephone: 00 39 668 65205
- Hours: Mon - Sat 9.00am-2.00am; Sun 12.00pm - 2.00am
Formerly a neighborhood coffee bar, now a street-side institution that
gets so packed on summer nights you may think you’re queuing for a Roma
game. There are few cooler places to order a long-glass drink and soak up
the sun while watching the beauties pass by. The rickety interior is done up
in much neon and plastic and the lively banter and fun atmosphere is the
perfect antidote to the sometimes museum-hushed seriousness of the city
around you. Not to be missed.
